Devotion: Be Ye Thankful

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord...

When we give thanks to God, it pleases His heart. We must be mindful at all times to offer thanksgiving—there is so much we can give thanks for, if we take the time and consider all His wonderful benefits. As we say thank you, we acknowledge the receipt from His hand that says our debts are paid in full. Our gratitude is worth more than any bull from the stall or any fatted calf.

It was no light matter when the Lord extended His hand of mercy to the ten lepers and only one returned to give Him thanks. The others couldn’t wait to go do all the things they missed in their unclean state. Sure they were excited, wouldn’t you? Still, in all our excitement over our new found liberties in Christ, let us not forget the One who has done us much good. Above all, let’s thank Him for who He is, and that our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. For being our righteous Savior who delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into His glorious light.

Scripture Verses:

Revelation 4:11
You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Psalm 75:1
WE give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.

Psalm 92:1, 2
"It is good to give thanks to the LORD, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night."

Psalm 95
Oh come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the LORD is the great God. And the great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also.

The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.

Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as in the wilderness, when your fathers tested Me. They tried Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, and said, "It is a people who go astray in their hearts. And they do not know My ways. So I swore in My wrath, they shall not enter My rest."

Psalm 97:12
Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.

Psalm 100
Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! Serve the LORD with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the LORD, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.

Psalm 107:8,9
Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for his goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.

Psalm 116:12,13
What shall I render to the LORD for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the LORD.

Psalm 136:1-3
OH, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever. Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever. See Psalm in its entirety.

Isaiah 51:3
"For the LORD will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody."

Ephesians 5:15-21
"See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God."

Colossians 1:3-14
"We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your love in the Spirit. For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins."

Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Luke 17:11-16
Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" So when He saw them, He said to the men, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And He was a Samaritan.

From David's Song of Thanksgiving
Excerpt: 1 Chronicles 16:8-13
Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; talk of all His wondrous works! Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD! Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His face evermore! Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth, O seed of Israel His servant, you children of Jacob, His chosen ones!
See Chapter 16 in its entirety.

A Prayer:
O Lord, Most High, we give You glory, honor and praise with thanksgiving; for You have created all things and by Your will they exist and are created. We rejoice in You who brought us Your salvation. Help us to be always mindful of who You are and what You have done. Help us to become more and more like Christ. Help us to love and obey You, and to testify of your mercy and Your grace. We pray Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Amen.
